Ferrer Ferran Returns to Argamasilla de Alba to Lead the 24th International Band Conducting Course, Now Heading Towards Its 25th Anniversary
Argamasilla de Alba (Ciudad Real, Spain), 11–14 August 2026 – Some appointments are never missed, and this is one of them. From 11 to 14 August, composer and conductor Ferrer Ferran returned to Argamasilla de Alba, in the heart of La Mancha, to teach the 24th edition of the International Wind Band Conducting Course, the same course he has led since its very first edition and which has never missed a single year.
The course opened on Tuesday 11 at the Municipal Music School, attended by the mayor, Sonia González, the councillor for culture, Soledad Sánchez-Rey, the president of the «Maestro Martín Díaz» Musical Association, Elisa Serrano, and the band’s conductor, Miguel Carlos Gómez Perona. The mayor welcomed the 12 students who had travelled from across Spain, including Valencia, Madrid and Andalusia, and presented Argamasilla de Alba not only as the «Place in La Mancha» of Cervantes but as a «place of music».
Over four days, the students worked with the «Maestro Martín Díaz» Musical Association, whose musicians are the heart of the course’s practical training: learning to conduct requires a real band in front of you, and here they have one every year. Ferrer Ferran expressly thanked them for their generosity and for the months of organisational work that allow students and teacher to focus on the music from the first moment.
In previous editions the course has welcomed students from Italy, Chile, Argentina, France and Germany, and many participants return year after year, a sign of the bonds it has created. They are the same bonds that gave rise to works such as En un Lugar de La Mancha and Alba Overture, dedicated to the town and its band, and that led to the maestro being honoured as Bachiller de Honor of Argamasilla de Alba.
The closing day was Friday 14. In the morning, diplomas were presented to the participants. In the evening, the traditional closing concert had been planned, but rain forced it to be moved to the Municipal Music School, where the students gave a short showcase of what they had learned in a warm, family atmosphere. A different farewell from the one planned, and a very Argamasilla one: nobody gave up, and the music went on.
As every year, the course included the 19th International Band Conducting Competition «Cueva de Medrano», in which the musicians of the association themselves choose the winner by vote. First prize went to Guillermo Urrestarazu Capellán, with 40% of the votes, and second prize to Alberto Muñoz Fernández, with 25%. Urrestarazu, a regular at the course, received the award with emotion and expressed his commitment to music and to the younger generations.
«Every time I come, you are better.»
— Ferrer Ferran, to the students at the closing
The maestro closed the evening by congratulating the participants on their progress, thanking the band, the Argamasilla de Alba Town Council and the Ciudad Real Provincial Council for their involvement, and expressing his wish to meet everyone again next year. It will be the 25th edition, an anniversary that, as he announced, will be very special.
